Alexandria

Acts 18:24

Apollos was from Alexandria, a city on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, founded by Alexander the Great in 322 BC. The city served as the capital of Egypt until Egypt was conquered by Arabs in AD 641. It was an important cultural center due to its university (modeled on that of Athens) and its library. The library was the greatest in the ancient world, containing between a half-million and one million books and scrolls. It was destroyed by fire, supposedly more than once, resulting in the loss of untold ancient manuscripts. The lighthouse of Alexandria was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the Greek translation of the Old Testament, the Septuagint, was completed there between the third and first centuries BC.
